Steve has experience in a range of research approaches with qualitative and quantitative methodologies and interests in Information Systems and Higher Education. He is an active research supervisor in both fields with many successful completions.

Biography

Steve completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Computer Science with Honours in 1990 and went on to complete a PhD in the same area in 1997. During his PhD he completed more than 55 sessional teaching appointments and in 1996 began working as a lecturer in the School of Computing and Information Technology at Griffith University.

In 1998 he became senior lecturer, writing curriculum, teaching, and coordinating Australia’s first Internet focused degree, Griffith University’s Bachelor of Internet Computing. Being one of Australia’s earliest practitioners in “flexible delivery”, now known as blended learning, and “flipped classes”, Steve fashioned an L&T oriented career.

In 2006, Steve completed a Graduate Certificate in Higher Education (GCHE) and in 2011 a Masters in Higher Education by research. While completing the Masters, Steve was seconded and then employed by the central academic development unit to work on his Strategic Priority projects to embed peer assistance for teaching and unit quality across the university. He also contributed expertise in the evaluation of teaching and in HDR supervision in design and delivery of units in the GCHE.

In 2013, Steve was invited to become Director of Learning and Teaching for the Griffith Sciences Group. In this role he had significant impact on improvements in teaching quality, and student experience of learning at an organisational scale. He led a Group-wide network of academics in scholarship of learning and teaching, chaired the Group’s L&T awards and grants programme, co-wrote the University’s L&T performance criteria and methods for its evaluation.

Steve accepted a role at UTAS in 2016 as Senior Lecturer in Tasmanian Institute for Learning and Teaching. In this role he leads the Awards, Grants and Fellowships programme and engages L&T leaders with the University’s Curriculum Consolidation and Renewal agenda.

Steve is the co-ordinator of ELT504, University Learning and Teaching Project, in the Bachelor of Education with Professional Honours.
