Research Themes

Associate Professor Stirling’s research aligns with the University's research theme of Better Health. Christine’s current role as Co-Director of the Better Health theme has seen her deliver university wide workshops on the theme of complexity designed to generate interdisciplinary and strategic research.  Christine’s research addresses the key challenges facing global health care: rapid increases in the aged needing health services and subsequent health worker shortages. She has improved experiences for older Australians through pioneering person-centred research to promote voice and improve access for older people. Christine has both increased knowledge in the areas of dementia and rural health and developed tools/services (for example decision aids and walk-in memory clinics) to translate her research into practice. Ensuring her work has impact is a hallmark of Christine’s research, beginning with engaging key stakeholders to identify research problems through to ensuring the translation of research results, with demonstrated impact on policy and practice.

Themes of research are

  1. Improving consumer centred care by giving voice to older people, those at risk of elder abuse
  2. Understanding the access needs of people living alone with dementia and carers
  3. The support needs of the informal workforce including ambulance volunteers and dementia carers
  4. Evaluating health service innovations such as expanded scope of practice roles.

Collaboration

Chris has had key research collaborations with Australian and New Zealand ambulance organisations, with health service clinicians at Tasmanian Health Organisation South, she is a member of the THO South Academic Precinct group.

Publications

Over the last decade Chris has had a productive track record of research dissemination with over 100 publications in diverse mediums to suit different dissemination strategies. She publishes in top ranked nursing, health service and gerontological journals such as 'Journal of Clinical Nursing', 'International Psychogeriatrics', and 'Sociology of Health & Illness'. She has published 36 A1 papers, 31 of these since 2010 plus 2 book chapters. Chris is lead/senior author on over 20 papers. As CIA lead Chris has needed to take significant leadership in all aspects of paper design and final product given the low capacity amongst junior nursing researchers. Chris's publications target dissemination and uptake of research findings by practitioners and policy makers in health through conference papers/posters, reports and practitioner focused booklets. She publishes systematic literature reviews and research results papers.

REDucing Delays In aneurysmal Subarachnoid Haemorrhage: the REDDISH study (2018 - 2020)$436,023
Description
Aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage (aSAH) is a rare form of stroke that kills up to 40% of sufferers within 1 month. Outcome can be improved through quickly receiving medical care but many people do not and this likely contributes to the poor outcomes. The REDucing Delays In Subarachnoid Haemorrhage (REDDISH) study will look at cases of aSAH across Tasmanian and Victoria so that we can understand the factors that contribute to delays in treatment and ultimately improve outcomes.

Paediatric & Adolescent INsulin pump Decision Aid - a Novel Intervention (2014)$50,023
Description
To develop and pilot a patient decision aid to help families of children and adolescents with Type 1 Diabetes make decisions about using insulin pumps. As every family is unique, the aid will help families to consider all the issues that may affect their ability to manage insulin pump therapy. We will base the decision aid on evidence in the literature and information from patients and families and expert advisors. We will trial the decision aid with families to see how useful they found the aid and whether it made the decision seem easier and changed their treatment preferences.
