Parents up to the age of sixty who can easily recall an incident in which they punished their child are eligible to participate in this study.
Participants will be interviewed about an occasion on which they punished their child. They will also be interviewed about an emotionally neutral interaction shared with their child, such as watching television together, and an emotionally neutral event in which the child is not present, such as preparing a cup of coffee.
The researcher will develop imagery scripts (a written account of the event) on the basis of the interview material, and then invite the participant back to the lab to have the script read to them while their psychophysiological responses are obtained. Psychophysiological measures will be made of each participant's heart and respiration rate, skin conductance and finger blood volume before, during and after the presentation of the scripts.
Parents will receive two hours' course credit for participating in the study in Hobart . There is a possibility of recruitment from the Launceston and Central Coast campuses if there are enough prospective participants and time permits this.
To indicate your desire to participate or enquire about the study, contact Dana Adaway on djadaway@utas.edu.au . Alternatively you may contact the supervisor, Dr Janet Haines, on J.Haines@utas.edu.au or 6226 7124.
