Resilience: the influence of peri-trauma responses to intimate partner abuse

Women over the age of 18 who can easily recall an incident in which they were subjected to physical, sexual or psychological abuse by a previous partner are eligible to participate in this study. Participants will be interviewed about an abusive event, a non-abusive event and an emotionally neutral event, such as preparing a cup of coffee. Participants will also be asked to complete a questionnaire package.  The researcher will develop imagery scripts (a written account of the event) on the basis of the interview material, and then invite the participant back to the lab to have the script read to them while their psychophysiological responses are obtained. Psychophysiological measures will be made of each participant's heart and respiration rate, skin conductance and finger blood volume before, during and after the presentation of the scripts.

Psychology students will receive up to three hours course credit for participating in the study in Hobart . There is a possibility of recruitment from the Launceston and Central Coast campuses if there are enough prospective participants and time permitting. To indicate your desire to participate or enquire about the study, contact Danielle Riley on 6226 7145 or rileyd@utas.edu.au . Alternatively you may contact the supervisor, Dr Janet Haines, on J.Haines@utas.edu.au or 6226 7124.
