Victims of crime: The experience of criminal justice activities

We are looking for individuals who have been the victim of a crime . We are interested in learning how people react to and cope with the experience of the crime and with the events that happen after that experience. Furthermore, we are interested in identifying the characteristics of these events that make them so stressful.

Participants will need to have testified in court AND/OR been interviewed by the police relating to the crime they experienced.

Session 1: Participants will be required to complete a set of brief questionnaires. They will then be interviewed to obtain details relating to an emotionally neutral event (such as making a hot drink), and an event where they were the victim of a crime. They will also be interviewed about their courtroom testimony AND/OR police interview regarding that crime.

Session 2: Scripts will be created of the events discussed in session 1. These scripts will be read to the participants, who will be required to vividly imagine the events, while psychophysiological (i.e., heart rate and respiration) and psychological measurements are recorded.

*First year psychology students will receive 2 – 2½ hours course credit*
