Excellence in Research for Australia is a Federal Government initiative that aims to identify and promote excellence across the full spectrum of research activity in Australia’s higher education institutions.
The ERA exercise is led by the Australian Research Council and evaluates the quality of the research undertaken in Australian universities against national and international benchmarks. The ratings are determined and moderated by committees of distinguished researchers. There have been four rounds of ERA to date; conducted in 2010, 2012, 2015 and 2018.
As a companion to ERA 2018, a national assessment of Research Engagement and Impact (EI) was undertaken. The EI assessment examines how universities are translating their research into economic, social and other benefits and encourage greater collaboration between universities, industries and other end-users of research.
