Electron Microscopy and X-Ray Microanalysis

This facility is equipped with:

  • Cameca SX100 electron microprobe
  • FEI MLA650 environmental scanning electron microscope
  • Hitachi SU-70 field emission scanning electron microscope
  • Horiba XGT-7000V x-ray analytical microscope (microXRF)

and supporting instrumentation (coaters, light microscopes, critical point dryer).

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

NMR spectroscopy at the CSL is used in a wide range of the sciences including organic, inorganic and organometallic chemistry, pharmacy, zoology, marine and plant science.

Organic Mass Spectrometry

The Laboratory has three organic mass spectrometers and associated chromatographs:

  • a Waters UPLC/Xevo triple quadrupole MS
  • a Bruker-300 triple quadrupole benchtop gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer and
  • a Kratos Concept double-focusing magnetic sector high resolution MS

GC-FID, Diode Array UV-Vis, ELSD and flow scintillation counting are also available.

Proteomics Mass Spectrometry

The UTAS proteomics facility is equipped with a Thermo Scientific LTQ Orbitrap high resolution tandem Mass Spectrometer with APCI, electrospray and nanospray flex ion sources.  The primary application of this instrument is label-free quantitative proteomics of complex protein samples.  Orthogonal and "single-shot" peptide separations are achieved using an Ultimate 3000 nanoflow UPLC system installed in July 2015.

Elemental Analyser

The facility for Elemental Microanalysis is equipped with a Thermo Finnigan EA 1112 Series Flash Elemental Analyser and is used to determine the Carbon, Nitrogen, Hydrogen and Sulphur contents of a variety of materials.

Isotope Ratio Mass Spectrometry

This facility is equipped with:

 

• PyroCube Elemental Analyser - Isoprime Mass Spectrometer for CNS analysis
• Micromass Optima for d13C and d18O analysis from carbonates
• VG Isoprep VG Sira Series II for d18O determination in water
• IR Laser combustion VG Sira Series II for spatially resolved d34S  analysis from minerals

 

The lab also has manual vacuum extraction lines for production and clean-up of SO2 and CO2.
