Sandy Bay Campus, Chemistry Building, Room 249
The Bruker-300, installed in 2011, provides excellent GC/MS/MS capabilities. The Waters Acquity UPLC-Xevo triple quadrupole MS combination, installed in 2010, has ESI & APCI ionisation modes, as well as diode array UV-Vis and ELSD detection. The Kratos Concept high resolution instrument has a GC inlet, and is fitted with a variety of ionisation modes and direct probes as well as many data acquisition modes. All three mass spectrometers are capable of acquiring tandem MS (MS/MS) data. A Varian 450 GC- FID was added to the facility in 2009.
These instruments are used for research in disciplines such as botany, forestry, agronomy, microbiology, marine chemistry, pharmacology, chemistry, environmental science, immunology and zoology.
Current applications include characterisation of synthetic compounds via low resolution spectra and accurate mass measurements, identification and quantitation of plant hormones at very low ppb levels, characterisation of natural products including essential oils, characterisation of catalysis products, polar and non-polar lipid analyses, identification and quantitation of plant pigments, insect and mammalian pheromone research, and pesticide residue determinations in essential oils and plant extracts. Pharmacological applications include metabolic fate of drugs and other xenobiotics, antibiotic and other drug assays, and characterisation and stability studies on Jack Jumper ant venom.
Many mainland Universities and other external clients regularly use this facility which has an established national reputation.
