This seminar explores ways ethnic minority (EM) students in Hong Kong conceive their ethnic identity in culturally diverse local schools known as Designated Schools (DS). It discusses how current education provisions in DS complicate EM students' ethnic identity development. In this project, I focus on Filipino students, a visible but lesser researched group of the EM. Drawing on sociocultural and symbolic interactionist theories, I aim to examine how Filipino students' ethnic identity is (partly) introjected, produced and emplaced in Hong Kong designated secondary classroom spaces using an ethnographic methodology.
Research Summer 2013 sessions are aimed primarily at Education researchers and Research Higher Degree students but would also be beneficial for researchers in the social sciences and humanities areas.
