This session is for those who use animals in research and teaching at UTAS.  

Research staff, PhD and Honours students who have not recently (c. 2 years) participated in a training session are urged to attend. 

Topics will include:

  • Obligations, role and responsibilities, particularly regarding legislative requirements and the Australian Code of Practice for the care and use of animals for scientific purposes.
  • UTAS Animal Ethics Committee and the ethics application and approval process
  • The role of the Animal Welfare Officer and requirements for carrying out invasive or surgical procedures.

At 12 noon, the Animal Welfare Officer will do an additional presentation consisting of two parts: a short talk on rodent anaesthesia and pain control followed by a talk on aseptic surgery including what is aseptic surgery, preparation of the patient and surgical kit, choice of instruments and sutures.  This is a theoretical demonstration only.
