Dr Graham Mitchell, Chief Scientist of Victoria and Principal at Foursight, will deliver his keynote address with reference to the Conference theme 'Beyond Candidature – Exploring Local and Global Research Pathways' and his experience working as a researcher in a number of sectors.
Keynote Description:
The diversity of research careers continues to expand as does the opportunity to bring together two or more disciplines to create a new one!
New methods of data generation, storage and analysis astound someone like myself whose research career "at the bench" and "in the field" was during the 70s and 80s.
Also extraordinary are the developments in the visualisation sciences including the capacity to "witness and track" molecular interactions and in sensor technologies and eResearch.
Whilst it is the era of "Big, Linked up Science", three imperatives endure: (a) deep knowledge of specialised areas of research not amenable to the "big battalion" approach, (b) the need to bring communities along in the discovery adventure even to the extent of their direct participation through "citizen science", and (c) the need to ensure translation of the research to create wealth and jobs and to promote health, well-being and social development.
This presentation will include Dr Mitchell's own Pilgrim's Progress in scientific research, research management, and policy advice to Governments.
This session is for registered attendees only.
