A few of the broad themes that will be discussed in this 90 minute workshop are:

  • Challenges associated with the supervisor-candidate relationship (in particular negotiating mutual expectations, the changing relationship);
  • Common emotional/motivational peaks and troughs in a PhD (Are some of these cyclical by nature? Is there a common emotional/confidence lifecycle. Are project crises common?)
  • External pressures due to:
    • Different cultural background, newness of the Tasmanian social and learning contexts, removal from support networks
    • Life pressures, births, deaths, illness, moving house, financial pressures etc
