UTAS requires that all staff submitting a research funding application use the Office of Research Services (ORS) to process the submission because, if successful:
- UTAS is obliged to categorise and report research income on grants to the Commonwealth. Our Research Block Grant (RBG) and Sustainable Research Excellence (SRE) income from the Commonwealth is based on the information we provide.
- All successful grants have reporting and financial milestones, and contractual obligations. The Office of Research Services records this information on a database to ensure that researchers receive reminders about their obligations.
- All research has a financial impact on the University, and this is calculated during the application process. In order to cover the costs of research for those grants that are not Australian Competitive Grants (eg. ARC and NHMRC) - Category 1 grants - and to meet the Commonwealth requirements for Competitive Neutrality, the University applies an indirect costs calculation to all research projects.
- All research has a bearing on the reputation of the University, and the final decision about submitting a research application lies with the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research.
Research Grants
The Office of Research Services (ORS) internal deadline for accepting grant applications for external funding is 10 working days prior to the funding scheme submission date.
For Research Grants, the application process is as follows:
- The researcher completes the application for research funding according to the specific funding scheme guidelines (note that some schemes require electronic submission, e.g. ARC, NHMRC);
- The researcher completes a Research Funding Clearance Form and when it is signed off by the Head of School, it is submitted to ORS - together with the application.
- The Research Grants Officer will liaise with the researcher regarding corrections to ensure that the application meets the funding body guidelines. The budget will be checked to ensure that the project has been costed to cover UTAS infrastructure costs.
- ALL research applications are signed off by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) prior to being submitted according to the funding body specifications.
Signing off Successful Applications
Funding agreements for successful grants can only be signed by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).
