Candidates are required to assign their intellectual property to the University through a 'Deed of Assignment' in cases where the proposed project falls into one of the following categories:

1. The University will make a special contribution of funding, resources, facilities or apparatus, (over and above what the University is generally obliged to provide), to enable that research to take place; or
2. Significant University intellectual property will be utilised in the course of the research; or
3. The Project will receive external funding OR other in-kind support (eg access to background or third party intellectual property, equipment, data, infrastructure etc) and the University or an external party requires an assignment of the intellectual property rights to comply with the conditions of funding.

If an assignment of intellectual property is required, the Graduate Research Office will advise the candidate at the appropriate time. For more information and advice for candidates and supervisors, see Intellectual Property and the Intellectual Property (Ordinance 18).

Note: If advised that the assignment of intellectual property is required, a candidate is required to complete and sign two original Deeds of Assignment.
