The University of Tasmania recognises that conference attendance is an important research activity which contributes to the research abilities and profile of a graduate research candidate. Significant skills can be gained and networking opportunities can arise which lead to future research collaborations and employment opportunities. Similar benefits can be gained from participating in short internships and other research training activities at research facilities or institutions of international standing in the candidate’s discipline area.

The Conference and Research Travel Fund has been established to assist candidates to participate in these important activities. The Fund will provide up to 50% of the funds required, to a maximum of $2,500. The remaining costs are to be covered by a candidate's School / Institute or another source.

There will be three opportunities to apply for funding in 2013:

• Round 1 - Closing date for applications: 31 January 2013
• Round 2 - Closing date for applications: 31 May 2013
• Round 3 - Closing date for applications: 30 September 2013
  

Note: Application forms will be made available for each round at the appropriate time. Candidates will be advised via email.

To be eligible for funding under this Scheme, applicants must either be:

• presenting a paper, defending a poster or actively participating in a discipline specific context at a conference;
• participating in a course, placements/internship,
• traveling to access relevant, high quality archives to learn an essential method, technique or information not available/accessible at the home institution, or
• undertaking concentrated engagement with experts in the research project area at a reputable international research facility.

Funding will be provided to a candidate no more than once in the course of their candidature, except in exceptional circumstances.  The funding should contribute to the cost of the most economical return airfare or travel cost, accommodation and meals, and registration fees.

Candidates should complete and submit the application form to the Graduate Research Office by the closing date. Please note that late, incomplete or retrospective applications will not be accepted.
