The Graduate Research - Sharing Excellence in Research (SEiR) Conference is an annual event hosted by the Tasmania University Union Postgraduate Council and Graduate Research. This Conference aims to bring graduate research candidates from all UTAS campuses and disciplines together for two days to showcase their work – ideas, progress and findings – and the excellence and diversity of graduate research at UTAS.
Pre-Conference Registration
Participants must register to attend the Conference prior to the event. An online registration form must be completed by Monday 5 August.
Candidates who have completed or plan to complete the Graduate Certificate in Research unit XGR502, Communicating Research, must defend a poster at the Graduate Research- SEiR Conference within the first 2 years of candidature.
For those defending and presenting a poster at the 2013 Conference, an abstract must also be submitted via the Abstract Submission Form by 5 August 2013.
Conference - Things to know
When you arrive at the Conference venue, you need to make your way to the Registration Desk so we can record that you have attended and give you your Registration Pack. You can register up till 1.00pm on Thursday and Friday.
You can view the 2013 Graduate Research SEiR conference schedule (PDF 100.2KB)) and the full program (PDF 1.1MB). If you have any further questions email postgrad.conference@utas.edu.au.
The Registration Pack will include the Program & Abstracts, name badge, People’s Choice voting form, poster display number and a reminder of your allocated poster defence time.
Conference venue and surrounds
The Conference is being held at the Tasmanian College of the Arts (DechaineuxTheatre and Foyer), Hunter St, Hobart.
Lunch, morning and afternoon tea are provided both days, on site and are free to all conference registrants.
There are also numerous restaurants, eateries, coffee shops and bars in the Salamanca/Wharf area and central district of Hobart.
If you are defending a Poster
Just remember that posters need to be up at least half an hour before the poster defence time you have been allocated (see the back of the program). If you have any questions about this ask us at the Registration Desk or via postgrad.conference@utas.edu.au. You will be given your poster number (on your name tag) which will correspond with your display board number. Adhesive velcro dots (male) will be provided in your Registration Pack.
A reminder that Conference abstracts are required by 5 August on the ‘Abstract Submission’ template. This document is used to generate the Conference Program and so it is essential that you adhere to the requested formatting. As this is an assessment requirement, this deadline is unnegotiable.
You are reminded that for this conference, only posters which are AO VERTICAL (not landscape) can be displayed. (The display boards are vertical, not landscape). Refer to the Guidelines for Poster Presentation (PDF 118.9KB) document for further information on presentation and preparation.
More tips on poster production can be found at ‘5 ways to fail a poster’.
Where can I get my poster printed?
UniPrint will print a size AO colour poster on 190 DSM satin art paper (no need to laminate) for $38.50. UniPrint has offices on campus in Hobart (6226 2519), Newnham (6324 3559) and Inveresk (6324 4080).
UniPrint will accept an email attached PDF of your poster - PDF being the safest mode as it is a "lock-down" file.
To ensure your poster is ready for the Conference, allow as much time as possible for the printing of your poster as the above printing services will be managing a large volume of poster production, not only yours.
Office Works and Kwik Kopy are alternative businesses.
Keynote and Workshops
The two keynote speakers for the conference are Professor Shelda Debowski, Deputy Vice Chancellor and Head of Campus (Fremantle) at Notre Dame University and; Dr Graeme Mitchell, Chief Scientist, Victoria, and Principal of Foresight Associates Pty Ltd.
There will be a variety of workshops run on site during the Conference. As these are confirmed, they will be posted on the Conference website.
