Laptop and Data Cloud

The Graduate Research Laptop Scheme is for all PhD candidates who commenced after the 1st January 2009. The scheme offers UTAS PhD students a current Dell or Macintosh Laptop to use during their studies depending on the schools IT support.

The laptop will be ceded to the PhD candidate for the maximum term of their PhD candidature unless their PhD candidature goes beyond maximum time without approval, is terminated, downgraded or withdrawn. In these cases the laptop must be returned within 14 days of the withdrawal/termination/downgrade. The laptop is to be treated as a University device and is managed according to the IT arrangements within the candidate's school or institute during the candidature period. Upon completion the laptop will become the candidate’s private property.

Storage Support

UTAS provides 5 gigabytes of file storage in a data cloud for each candidate. This storage provision is provided, managed and supported centrally. Laptop support is provided by the school/institute or faculty and ITR, through the Service Desk, which provides support for University provided services such as email, file storage, and UCONNECT wireless access. Support is also offered by the laptop manufacturers, DELL and Apple, and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Steps to Collect your PhD Laptop

  1. Once you have been enrolled, the Graduate Research Office will contact you by e-mail with further information and forms in relation to collection of your laptop from the Office.
  2. You will need to contact the correct IT support (see below) to arrange a time for them to setup your laptop to UTAS specifications.
  3. Once you have spoken with IT, you can then collect your laptop from the Graduate Research Office at 301 Sandy Bay Road for Hobart candidates (see map)*. You will need to bring your agreement form and Student ID when you collect your laptop.
  4. Take your laptop to the School or Institute's IT department for setup. Please see the list of IT support for contact details.

*Candidates from other campuses should contact Graduate.Research@utas.edu.au to arrange delivery.

Laptop Specifications and Bundle

The Graduate Research Laptop Scheme Bundle includes:

Hardware

  • Dell or Apple Laptop with operating system provided (schools or institutes will determine the operating system utilised on the laptop)

Software

  • Desktop publishing software, footnoting software and anti-virus software, as determined and supplied by the school/institute
  • Can connect to the UCONNECT wireless or wired service and access resources such as antivirus, internet connectivity and printing services (CAPS, http://caps.its.utas.edu.au/)
  • Virtual Private Network Access (VPN)

Centrally Managed File Storage - up to 5 gigabytes of 'cloud' file storage per candidate

  • 24x7x365 phone support for hardware or software provided by DELL on 1300 662 286, or support is available at http://support.dell.com/ProSupport
  • Next Business Day hardware support for 3 calendar years, provided by DELL
Apple
  • Direct support with Apple on 1300 321 456 for 3 years, covering hardware and general phone support for operating system and pre-installed software. (Global Warranty)
  • Support for 3 years at any Apple Retail Store worldwide.
  • In-store support at any Next Byte Store: local store 03 6238 1000
