Hybrid Robust Tracking for Augmented Reality Applications

This project will research a novel and robust positioning tracking
technology for Augmented Reality (AR) applications. For the past few
years, there have been significant advancements in natural feature
tracking, which uses computer vision algorithms to extract natural
features from environments. The robustness of the computer vision-based
tracking will continue to improve but it is widely accepted that there is
unlikely to be a single tracking technology to adequately met the
requirements of AR applications. The combination of the vision-based and
inertial-based tracking has been considered by many researchers as a
ultimate tracking solution to AR applications, as the combined system
renders itself nicely to the practical use of many AR applications.

We will research and develop a hybrid tracking system that can optimally
combine the best of natural feature tracking and inertial tracking
technologies. Our goal is to achieve highly robust tracking system that
can meet the requirements of the industrial AR applications. This project
will have access to international collaborators and state of the art
laboratory facilities in the HITLab Australia. A strong research
background, strong programming skills (e.g. C, C++, Matlab) with
experience in computer vision algorithms and sensor data acquisitions are
required to undertake this project.
