The Generic Attributes set out below are expected of all Doctor of Philosophy graduates of the University of Tasmania.
| Knowledge |
Comprehensive knowledge at the frontier of a field of research to which one has made a substantive and original contribution; Advanced understanding of key conventions, norms and perspectives in the discipline and multi-disciplinary environment and: The demonstrated ability to orally defend one’s research. |

| Cognitive, Contextual, Problem- solving, Research Design |
Demonstrated ability to formulate viable research questions and pursue complex investigations; Ability to conduct research using methods appropriate to the discipline; Demonstrated capacity to use creative, technical and problem solving skills with flexibility in a research context; Ability to synthesise and contextualise an existing corpus of research-based scholarly literature; and Demonstrated ability to work within, critically reflect upon and challenge the norms, perspectives, methods and practices in a research area; |
| Global Social responsibility and Commitment to Learning |
Respect for intellectual integrity and comprehension of societal, ethical, and legal responsibilities as a researcher; Awareness of the relevance and value of the research undertaken to national and international communities of scholars; and Ongoing capacity to generate new knowledge and/or ability to apply knowledge in practice; |
| Communication & Interpersonal Skills |
Capacity to cooperate with fellow scholars and to respect their contributions; Ability to lead projects; Ability to cogently present, in writing and orally, a complex original investigation for examination against international standards, and to communicate results to peers and the community |
| Data & Information Management |
Advanced capacity to manage data and information appropriate to the discipline area; and Understanding of the requirements for data longevity and responsibility to ensure accessibility to future researchers or auditors. |
| Intellectual Property & Funding |
An awareness, where appropriate, of issues relating to the management of intellectual property and the commercialisation of innovation and; Awareness of the mechanisms and requirements of funding bodies as well as the ability to formulate applications to such bodies. |
The Generic Attributes set out below are expected of all Research Masters graduates of the University of Tasmania.

Demonstrated knowledge of principal doctrines of research in the discipline; Substantive understanding of key conventions, norms and perspectives in the discipline and multi-disciplinary environment. |

The ability to apply an advanced body of knowledge in a range of contexts for research and/or as a pathway to further learning; Ability to pose viable research questions and to undertake research on a clearly-defined project; Demonstrated capacity for creative, technical and problem solving skills in a research context; Understanding of the broad concepts surrounding research in the discipline/s; and Capacity for critical evaluation of relevant scholarly literature. |
| Global Social responsibility and Commitment to Learning |
Respect for intellectual integrity and comprehension of societal, ethical, and legal responsibilities as a researcher; and A commitment to ongoing learning, research development or professional practice. |
| Communication & Interpersonal Skills |
Ability to cooperate with fellow researchers and scholars and respect their contributions; Ability to present a sustained argument and communicate research results, in oral and written form, to peers and non-specialists. |
| Data & Information Management |
Ability to manage data and information appropriate to the discipline area; and An understanding of the requirements for data longevity and ensuring its accessibility to future researchers or audit. |
| Intellectual Property & Funding |
An awareness, where appropriate, of issues surrounding the management of intellectual property and the commercialisation of innovation and; Awareness of the mechanisms and requirements of funding bodies. |
