- Candidate

means the status conferred on a person who is enrolled as a Candidate under these rules.

- Commencement Date

means the date nominated by a Candidate for the commencement of Candidature in accordance with these rules.

- Confirmation of Candidature

means confirmation by the Dean that Candidature may progress.

- Days

means days on which the University is ordinarily open for business, unless otherwise stated.

- Dean

means the Dean of Graduate Research or an authorised delegate of the Dean.

- Degree

means a higher degree by research set out in the Table accompanying these rules.

- Doctoral Degree

means both a Doctor of Philosophy and Doctoral Degree (Professional) unless otherwise specified.

- Examiner

means an independent, internationally recognised expert in the relevant subject area appointed to examine a Thesis.

- Fail Grade
|

means a grade awarded to a Thesis by an Examiner indicating that the Thesis has not satisfied the general written assessment for the Degree sought and cannot be revised to attain a Pass Grade.

- FTE
|

means full time equivalent and is the measure by which the Maximum Degree Period will be calculated.

- Full Time
|

means an FTE of 1.0.
|
- General Counsel and University Secretary
|

includes a person authorised by the General Counsel and University Secretary for the relevant purpose.

- Graduate Certificate in Research
|

is an award attained by successful completion of coursework units approved for inclusion in the Graduate Certificate in Research and set down in the Procedures.

- Graduate Research Coordinator
|

means an Academic Staff Member who oversees Candidature supervision within a School in consultation with the Head of School, appointed in accordance with these rules.

- Head of School
|

means the head of the relevant School.
|
- Maximum Degree Period
|

means the period within which a Thesis must be submitted and, subject to these rules, is:
(a) for Doctoral Candidates, not more than 4 years; and
(b) for Masters Candidates (Research), not more than 2 years.

- Minimum Research Component
|

means a quantum of research undertaken in a degree previously awarded by a Recognised Tertiary Institution or the University, and considered sufficient by the Research College Board for admission to a particular Degree.
|
- Part Time
|

means an FTE of 0.5.
|
- Pass Grade
|

means a grade awarded to a Thesis by an Examiner indicating that the Thesis has satisfied the general written assessment for the Degree sought.

- Primary Supervisor
|

means a Supervisor appointed in accordance with these rules who is responsible for ensuring that all administrative and regulatory requirements prescribed for Candidates in the Procedures are met by the Candidate.

- Procedures
|

means Procedures of Graduate Research which are prescribed by the Dean.
|
- Recognised Tertiary Institution
|

means a tertiary institution, in Australia or overseas, that awards degrees that the Dean decides are comparable in standard to degrees awarded by the University in accordance with guidelines referred to in the Procedures.

- Register
|

means a register on which persons are entered as Supervisors of Candidates and includes the qualifications and supervision experience of those persons.
|
- Research Active
|
-
means actively engaged in research, as further defined by the Research College Board, for the purposes of eligibility to be entered on the Register.
|
- Research Plan
|

means a plan that outlines, within the Maximum Degree Period, the direction and milestones of all aspects of a Research Program.
|
- Research Program
|
-
means the program of study and research training to be undertaken by a Candidate over the course of Candidature which is planned and documented in the Research Plan.
|
- Research Project
|
-
means the focus and purpose of the research to be undertaken by a Candidate.
|
- Satisfactory Academic Performance
|

means performance which is regarded as satisfactory for the relevant Degree, taking into account a Candidate's development of and compliance with their Research Plan.

- School
|

means a school, institute or centre of the University.
|
- Supervisor
|

means a person entered on the Register in respect of a Candidate or Candidates.
|
- Supervisory Team
|

means a group that consists of a minimum of two and a maximum of four Supervisors entered on the Register to supervise a particular Candidate.
|
- Thesis
|

means a body of work that a Candidate submits for examination which embodies the results of the Candidate's research and comprising:
(a) a written text with conventional chapters presented as typescript; or
(b) a written text containing a combination of peer reviewed publications and conventional chapters presented as typescript; or
(c) creative, visual or professional practice products together with an exegesis presented as typescript.

- Unsatisfactory Grade

means a grade awarded to a Thesis by an Examiner indicating that the Thesis has not satisfied the general written assessment criteria for the Degree sought but might do so with substantive revision.

- Viva Voce
|

means a formal meeting of the Viva Voce Examination Committee at which a Doctoral Candidate is orally examined on their Thesis in person, and which may be attended by a Supervisor or nominee of the Candidate as an observer at the invitation of the chair.

- Viva Voce Examination Committee
|

means a committee that conducts the Viva Voce, which comprises a minimum of 2 of the Examiners of a Candidate's Thesis and is chaired by an independent person appointed by the Dean.
