The Human Research Ethics Committee (Tasmania) Network is comprised of two committees: the Health and Medical HREC and the Social Sciences HREC.

The Health and Medical HREC is responsible for reviewing all research projects that involve the following:

  1. Invasive physiological, clinical, and/or medical interventions;
  2. Research involving the use of human tissue (including blood, reproductive and other tissues);
  3. Human genetic research;
  4. Staff, patients or resources of any hospital in Tasmania (both Public and Private).

The Social Sciences HREC reviews all research involving human participation that do not fall within the scope of the Health and Medical HREC.

In practical terms this means that the Health and Medical HREC is responsible for the majority of research projects in the health sciences, whilst the Social Sciences HREC reviews projects from many fields such as psychology, arts, education and law.
