Prior approval applications
If your project already has approval from a NHMRC registered Australian HREC, you should complete a prior approval application form. This should be submitted along with a copy of the approved application, and a copy of the formal letter of approval.
Please also include a localised (Tasmanian researcher-specific) information sheet and consent form.
Prior approval application forms can be accessed at:
Full applications
If your project is more than low risk, you will need to complete a full application to be reviewed by the committee.

Low risk applications
If your project is low risk (the only foreseeable risk is one of discomfort), you can submit a low risk application. These are reviewed by the Chair on behalf of the HREC. The Chair may determine that your project presents more than low risk to participants and will request that you complete a full application.
Low risk application forms can be accessed at:
Exemptions
Section 5.1.22 National Statement sets out the criteria for exemption from formal HREC review. If you believe that your research satisfies this criteria, it is advisable to ask a colleague or supervisor to confirm the basis on which you have made this assessment and retain a record of this, as the HREC cannot take any responsibility for research undertaken without an ethics approval.
It may also be advisable to check the publication requirements of relevant journals as some may insist upon HREC review.
If you are unsure whether the exemption criteria applies to your method of data collection, please consult the appropriate Executive Officer (refer to When and where to submit).
