Maintaining high standards of mentoring and supervision is essential for creating a research culture of excellence, integrity and professionalism. Section 3 of the Code describes the roles of institutions, research supervisors, and research trainees in developing this culture. Graduate Research is currently in the process of revising and updating relevant policies, procedures and guidelines to ensure compliance with the Code.
Responsibilities of the University of Tasmania
The University will:
- Ensure that each research trainee has an appropriately qualified and trained supervisor
- Provide induction and training for all research trainees.
- Promote awareness of its policies and procedures, and other guidelines and legislation relating to the responsible conduct of research.
Responsibilities of research supervisors
Supervisors are expected to:
- Ensure training is provided to research trainees as soon as possible
- Guide the professional development of research trainees by providing guidance in all matters relating to research conduct and overseeing all stages of the research process, including identifying the research objectives and methods, obtaining ethics approvals, obtaining funding, conducting the research, and reporting the research outcomes.
- Maintain oversight of the research outcomes
- Ensure research trainees receive appropriate credit for their work

Research trainees are required to:
- Seek guidance from research supervisors
- Participate in induction and training
