Section 7: Conflicts of Interest

In the Code, a conflict of interest is described as being a divergence between the individual interests of a person and their professional responsibilities such that an independent observer might reasonably conclude that the professional actions of that person are unduly influenced by their own interests. Section 7 of the Code describes the responsibilities of institutions and researchers for managing conflicts of interest in the research environment. The Australian Code Steering Committee is currently developing the University’s policies and procedures based on this section of the Code.
Responsibilities of the University of Tasmania
The University will:
- Maintain and have readily available a policy for managing conflicts of interest
- Keep records of how each conflict is managed
Responsibilities of researchers
Researchers are expected to:
- Read and understand the University’s policies and procedures related to managing conflicts of interest
- Disclose any actual or apparent conflict of interest as soon as possible
- Maintain records of activities that may lead to conflicts
