Come Walk With Us offers an introductory four-hour cultural safety workshop within a Tasmanian Aboriginal context with three discrete learning components. All three sections complement each other and are best applied sequentially.
Section 1 focuses on foundational information and health status
Section 2 walks us through history and changing the landscape
Section 3 is for discussion and reflection
Come Walk With Us is presented to workshop participants assuming no prior knowledge about Tasmanian Aboriginal history, health status and culture and is suitable for students and staff of the University of Tasmania.
Rationale
The development of effective health care delivery to Australian Aborigines is currently one of the underpinning strategies to improve Aboriginal health outcomes. The need for health professionals to become better informed about Aboriginal issues has been recognised and acknowledged in key government reports. A well-trained health workforce will help to secure and sustain health improvements for Aboriginal communities.
It is acknowledged that practitioners working with Australian Aborigines need a diverse range of skills in the delivery of cross-cultural care and in the prevention of chronic illness. Such learning is likely to be more effective if it is integrated within the structure of existing curricula rather than provided as a learning add-on. This approach underpins this Aboriginal health curriculum project of which Come Walk With Us is a key strategy for the University of Tasmania.
In addition, the University is committed to fairness for all staff and students in their work and learning environments. This Come Walk With Us program will assist staff and students to gain cross-cultural skills and to support the integration of Aboriginal issues across the University.

Riawunna Training
Dear All,
I would like to tell you about the amazing training I was fortunate enough to attend on Cultural awareness. The learning I received from this training was immense and incredibly enlightening. I was able to gain such a clear insight into the experiences of Aboriginal people in an open guilt free environment (which is an amazing achievement as this area leans itself to guilt and sorrow for a large proportion of people of western origin). The way the training itself was implemented really differed from the normal process of training which encapsulated the cultural differences while at the same time showed how much each of us can learn and grow from these differences. I felt a true shift in my awareness and understanding of the first inhabitants of this land and I know that this shift will make me a better person who is a little more liberated from the bonds that tied me to defensiveness and ignorance. I would especially like to thank Clair and her team for their remarkable skills and patience.
All the Best
