The Murina program offeres Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students
An introduction to the University
Familiarisation with course and subject options
An opportunity to develop academic skills
An indication of academic readiness to undertake undergraduate study
Contact with staff from academic schools
Study, computer and resource facilities
A source of ongoing friendship, cultural, academic and social support.
This enabling or bridging programme is a non-award course which is offered at both the Launceston and Hobart campuses of the University of Tasmania to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over 18 years of age. Some components are available by distance education.
The Murina Programme does not attract the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS) fee. However, students may be required to pay a University Entrance Fee and or a Services and Amenities Fee.
The Murina programme offers two pathways to assist students to build confidence through participation in a range of introductory and preparatory subjects to facilitate progression to an undergraduate course of their choice.
The programme also includes field trips to Aboriginal sites and communities to incorporate archaeological, historical and cultural studies.
PATHWAY 1 focuses on personal development and includes
- Cultural Studies & development (e.g. Family History, Creative Writing)
- Academic Skills and
- Introduction to University Studies.
PATHWAY 2 focuses on the transition to undergraduate studies and includes
- Introduction to Aboriginal Studies programme (one unit per semester)
- Tertiary Learning Skills and
- Plus two electives from a range of introductory subjects eg. Introduction to Social Sciences, Introduction to Teaching, Introduction to Health; and/or one or two undergraduate subjects.
The Murina Programme is offered over two 13 week semesters and provides the following study options:
PATHWAY 1: fulltime for one year only
PATHWAY 2: fulltime or part-time for 1-2 years
Aboriginal students undertaking undergraduate studies may choose units in the Murina Programme to enhance their academic success and broaden their skill base. For more information, please contact the course co-ordinators.
