Riawunna Centre for Aboriginal Education offers a wide range of
services to Aboriginal students and the Aboriginal Community. The
Centre is located on both the Hobart and Launceston campuses and a student support officer at the Cradle Coast Campus.
Riawunna assists all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students
who are studying at the University of Tasmania. Services include:
Orientation Week
This program is offered to new undergraduates before the commencement
of first semester. Activities include:
Familiarisation with the Campus
Tour of the Library
Introduction to Academic Terms
Enrolment Assistance
ABSTUDY Information and Assistance
Academic Assistance
Information on Services Available to Students
Indigenous Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ITAS) Program
ITAS is a program administered by Riawunna for the benefit of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. This program provides
students, with individual and or group tuition to assist in achieving
success with their studies.
Resource Materials
Riawunna has a unique reference collection of books, articles,
audiovisual materials and cultural materials for use by students
and staff at the University and members of the Aboriginal community.
Photocopying facilities are available at a minimum cost.
Murina Program
The Murina Program is Riawunna's own teaching program, designed
to prepare students for University studies. The program allows
maximum flexibility, and a range of subjects that targeted students
needs and reflect Aboriginal community the aspirations.
This program is open to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander
people over 18 years and mature aged people are especially encouraged
to apply. The Murina Program is run over two, 13 week semesters
and includes field trips and other cultural activities.
Orientation and Assesment Program
This program is offered to Aboriginal students who wish to apply
for admission to a University undergraduate course or the Murina
Program.
Held over 4 - 5 days, the Orientation and Assessment Program
informs new students about the University of Tasmania, their course
options and the support facilities available to them on campus.
An academic assessment is undertaken to assist students with
course selection.
Through the Orientation and Assessment Program, Aboriginal students
meet staff and fellow students and establish networks, which will
be of value to them throughout their studies.
The Orientation and Assessment Program is conducted annually
on Hobart, Launceston and Burnie campuses as required.
