Local lessons in health

Year 10 Health Careers - Burnie (2)

North-West school students have been spending time at the Rural Clinical School this week to learn how to pursue a career in health.

The University of Tasmania’s Year 10, 11 & 12 Health Career Evenings took place on the 6th and 7th of March at the RCS Burnie and Mersey campuses.

This year’s sessions shared information about assorted health courses including Medicine, Medical Research, Paramedicine, Human Life Sciences, Pharmacy, Nursing & Midwifery and Psychology.

Attendees spoke to local health students and health professionals about what their work was like, and were encouraged to ask questions about the transition to higher education, university life and future career interests.

“This year we widened the program to include Year 10 because of a rise in enquiries from students at this level who have already made the decision to study health,” Dr Lizzi Shires, Director of the Rural Clinical School said.

“Often students attending these sessions have already expressed an interest in pursuing a health career, so the evenings are about providing advice and guidance about the next steps, and highlighting the many opportunities that are available to local students.

“We know that students who originate from rural or regional areas are more likely to return to those places to practice their profession, so we are keen to encourage local students to consider a career in health."

Each evening comprised of short presentations followed by an expo where attendees could gather more information about careers, scholarships, study pathways and student services.

The sessions were attended by approximately 160 people.
