Dr Judi Parson is a paediatric qualified Registered Nurse, Play Therapist and Post Doctoral Research Fellow.
Judi has experienced a clinically diverse nursing career which has taken her across a number of Australian states and to the United Kingdom. She has practiced in various specialty fields including paediatrics, transplant care, aged care, and radiology. In 2000 she moved into the tertiary education sector with Central Queensland University, where she completed her PhD which investigated the nurses’ use of procedural play for children undergoing invasive treatment. Judi studied play therapy in London and continues to practice paediatric play therapy at Play Therapy World one day per week and is actively involved in developing play therapy in Australia, She is also one of the Directors of the Austrasia Pacific Play Therapy Association (APPTA).
Dr Parson’s three year position is funded by the Royal Hobart Hospital Research Foundation to work with Prof. Isabelle Ellis based at the Rural Clinical School.
Current Research
· “Humanistic Expressions: Caring for a person with dementia”. An ethnographic study into the ways carers playfully engage with people with dementia
· PoDFAR – is a Prospective cohort study of Diabetes-related Foot health in Australian Rural areas). Judi is a team member in this large cohort study involving Victorian and North and North-West Tasmanian podiatric services who care for the foot health of people with diabetes.
