The Rural Clinical School recently hosted a visit by 28 Year 2 students from St Peter Chanel Catholic School, Smithton.
The students enjoyed their morning bandaging teddy bears, conducting heart rate experiments and learning about hand hygiene.
The students were supervised by Rural Clinical School 5th Year Medical students, and Acting Co-Director Lizzi Shires, who believes that school visits to the Clinical School have many benefits.
“There’s a practical learning element for the school students of course, but it also helps to de- mystify the hospital environment and experience for them – and hopefully also sparks an interest in perhaps pursuing a career in health themselves down the track.”
“Our medical students also enjoy the interacting with the school children, and it helps to reinforce their own communication skills and teaching skills. It’s good fun all round.”
St Peter Chanel Grade 2 teacher, Daniel Bellinger, said his students had a fantastic time at the Rural Clinical School.
“The medical students were extremely engaging and the way they delivered the information was spot on. We felt very welcomed and involved" he said.
