Hot Topics in Science
The Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology in conjunction with the Department of Education will be offering a FREE teacher professional learning opportunity – “Hot Topics in Science”
This will be offered to primary and secondary teachers (Yr 5 – 10) who wish to update and broaden their science content knowledge and consider how they might incorporate this knowledge as they implement the Australian Curriculum in their classroom.
The program will include current developments in science research ("hot topics") at UTAS – such as food security, climate change impacts in the marine environment, conservation biology, renewable energy, and radioastronomy. Content will include lectures, hands-on activities and site visits. Approaches that help students engage with science concepts and become effective science learners will be considered, and teachers will be asked to trial tasks in their classrooms.
“Hot Topics in Science” will be held over three days from Monday 30 Sept – Wed 2 Oct , with a follow up day in November. For those enrolled in the Graduate Certificate in Science Education, successful completion of this professional learning opportunity and associated assessment will meet the requirements of KAA501 Science Content 1. It will also allow teachers to investigate future opportunities in science education study at UTAS
