Professor Brian Yates’ new position
UTAS’ Professor Brian Yates has been appointed as an Executive Director of the Australian Research Council (ARC).
Prof Yates’ new role will see him advising the ARC on strategic research directions in Australia.
He is currently Professor in the UTAS School of Chemistry and an Australian Teaching and Learning Council Discipline Scholar in Science.
Prof Yates said "I am very pleased to be joining the ARC in Canberra. It is very exciting to be involved in shaping the strategic direction of research and research funding in this country.”
He holds a Bachelor of Science with Honours and a Diploma of Education from UTAS and a doctorate from the Australian National University.
Prof Yates loved chemistry as a student and always felt a pull towards teaching and research.
His research expertise has resulted in numerous publications and achievements.
Prof Yates has been Chair of the Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences grants panel at the ARC for the last two years, and he heads up the National Computational Infrastructure committee.
UTAS Professors Richard Coleman and Andrew Wells were also executive directors with the ARC.
Prof Coleman is now Deputy Director of the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies and Prof Wells is now Executive Director of the UTAS Research Division.
