The Faculty of Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for PhD Scholarships from individuals who aspire to become influential researchers in their field. In accepting this invitation, you will embark on an exceptional research journey with us in our Environmental Futures initiative.

Environmental Futures harnesses UTAS’s world-class interdisciplinary research that calls on our strengths in chemistry, plant science, zoology, evolutionary biology, ecology, marine sciences and oceanography, agricultural science, earth science, mathematical modelling, bio-informatics, biogeography and remote sensing. We link with architects and designers, philosophers, social and political scientists and economists to address the human and community issues that form the matrix for addressing environmental challenges, at the local, national and international level.
By completing your PhD at UTAS you will: utilise Tasmania’s proximity to unique and diverse ecosystems such as alpine heath, temperate rainforests, coastal landscapes, the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, conduct your research in Australia’s very own ‘living laboratory’, work alongside leading researchers; have access to world-class facilities; and recognise the power of your ideas to make a difference in Australia’s environmental future.

Research is undertaken in all schools in the Faculty, with many schools connected with world-class special research centres (the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence in Ore Deposits [CODES]), inter organisational initiatives (the Australian Centre for Research On Separation Science [ACROSS] and Food Safety Centre) and Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) (CRC for Forestry, Australian Seafood CRC and Bushfire CRC). The Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural (TIA) is a highly successful partnership with the Tasmanian State Government. Although based in Tasmania, the Faculty has an international reach and higher degree research candidates who take advantage of the outstanding opportunities to study in an extraordinary environment will be greatly rewarded.
