School of Mathematics & Physics
Research facilities in the School include radio observatories at Mt. Pleasant (near Hobart, TAS), Ceduna (SA), Yarragadee (WA), and Katherine (NT), and optical observatories at Mt. Canopus and Bisdee Tier, TAS. Topics of particular interest in astrophysics include the interstellar medium, interstellar masers, and star formation, active galaxy nuclei, star formation histories of nearby dwarf galaxies, and discovery of exo-planets. In biostatistics there is active research in various analysis techniques for analysing genetic sequencing data. In applied maths there are researchers studying new designs for MRI machines as well as problems in theoretical fluid dynamics.
