Column/bar graphs

Column graphs should be chosen when the independent variable (on the horizontal axis) occurs in discrete categories eg food types, species, colour. The vertical axis in a column graph represents numerical data. 

  1. The columns should be drawn so that they are not in contact with one another to indicate the lack of continuity.
     

  2. The columns should be the same width and drawn with a ruler.
     

  3. Avoid shading the columns, unless a multiple column graph is drawn, in which case a key is required.
