Welcome to the School of Social Sciences. We are an interdisciplinary School that offers an exciting range of research and teaching in Sociology and Criminology, Social Work, Politics and International Relations, and Journalism, Media and Communications, through the Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast campuses.
Research in the School is broadly focused on the application of social science methods and concepts to social and policy issues. Current research strengths include media production and consumption, crime and justice, community policing, law enforcement, housing and community, nature and the environment, social history, social inclusion, migration and ethnicity, the body, health and medicine, sport, leisure, and consumption.
We offer undergraduate study in Sociology and Criminology, Social Work, Politics and International Relations, and Journalism, Media and Communications. We have a vibrant postgraduate community and offer the opportunity to pursue a higher degree by research, with leading academic researchers who are recognised internationally in their fields.
The School is an international leader in the education and training of social workers, and the police, though our professional qualifying programmes.
Much of what we do in the School sees us involved with the community as staff and students alike. Staff are frequent media commentators, we are involved with school partnership programmes and we work with government and non-government agencies on research programmes. Study in the School offers opportunities for internships with the media and state parliament, and international exchanges with partner universities.
