Fiona worked as a print and broadcast journalist for more than two decades across Australia and is currently State Director of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in Tasmania.
Her study is titled ‘No Longer Anonymous: Surviving Trauma in the Media Spotlight’. It examines the Australian news media’s treatment of 14 ordinary people who survived 11 extraordinary events—between the 1980 disappearance of baby Azaria Chamberlain and the 2006 Beaconsfield Mine rescue. The study investigates why their trauma experience, images and names were given so much prominence that they became enduring “accidental celebrities” and what this treatment tells us about journalistic practice.
