Libby Lester is Professor of Journalism, Media and Communications at the University of Tasmania. She worked as a journalist for 15 years for Australian newspapers and magazines prior to joining the university in 2002, including for the Sunday Age and Melbourne Herald. She is the author of Media and Environment: Conflict, Politics and the News (Polity 2010) and Giving Ground: Media and Environmental Conflict in Tasmania (Quintus 2007). She has co-edited two books: Transnational Protests and the Media (with Simon Cottle 2011) and Environmental Conflict and the Media (with Brett Hutchins 2013). Her research has appeared in leading journals including Media, Culture & Society, International Journal of Communication, Journalism, Journalism Studies and Media International Australia. She is working on two ARC Discovery projects: ‘Changing Landscapes: Online Media and Politics in an Age of Environmental Conflict’ with Brett Hutchins and Simon Cottle (2010-2012), and ‘Leadership and the Construction of Environmental Concerns in Australia’ with Bruce Tranter (2013-2015). Her undergraduate degree is from ANU, and she has a PhD in Media and Communications from the University of Melbourne. She has been a Visiting Fellow at Oxford University's Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, is incoming Vice Chair of the International Environmental Communication Association, and is an Associate Editor of the journal Environmental Communications.
