Hobart’s Queen’s Domain — aka the Paddock or the People’s Park — has provoked stories, editorials and letters to the editor that reveal a strong engagement by the public from the very early days of the colony.
Charming language, territorial dogmatism and classic barneys in defence of inalienable land have long played out in print. This Masters project will feature analysis of news coverage spanning two hundred years, charting the key issues of contention relating to the use of the land and the buildings within the boundaries of the Queen’s Domain, alongside the emotional ties with which Hobart residents are bound to the grassy and wooded hills.
