After graduating with a Bachelor of Social Work from the University of Tasmania in 1989, Mara has worked in a range of positions in the areas of education, family violence, and women’s health. Mara completed her Master of Arts in Women’s Studies in 2000, consolidating the feminist lens she brings to her practice.
Mara has had a long term relationship with the School of Social Work in a number of roles. Mara has coordinated and taught the unit Community Work Practice as well as been a member of the Field Education team.
Prior to rejoining the team in 2010, Mara was working for 18 months as a social work adviser with the newly established Social Work Department at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Cambodia (with the Australian Volunteers International program).
Mara has held numerous positions over the years with community organisations. This includes being a founding member of Interweave Arts Association (1998-2004); Secretary, Working It Out (2001-2003); Member, Women’s Health Network (1995-2003); Member, Survivors Management Committee (1996); Secretary, Launceston Outreach Service (1992-1994), Member, National Council of Women (2007-8).
Whilst in Cambodia, Mara co-authored “Rebuilding Post-Conflict Cambodia By Educating Tomorrow’s Social Workers”, in Social Work Education in Countries of the East: Issues and Challenges (ed Selwyn Stanley), 2010.
Previous research has been in the areas of young women’s educational experiences and women’s perceptions of self.
