Short Title: Housing security among retired ex-service people
Deborah’s study explores the relationship between service life and later life housing outcomes.
Abstract
Homeownership rates in those aged over 65 years in Australia are 83%. In comparison, the rates among retired ex-service people who are entitled DVA beneficiaries are low (67- 69%). Thus, a greater need for rental and alternative housing (23%) can be identified when compared to the general aged community (13%). Whether this rate also implies low levels of housing security is core to understanding the level of relative disadvantage within this population. While homeownership is considered the most secure form of housing, it is not the only tenure type that provides housing security. The research aim then is to describe housing security within the retired ex-service population and to gain greater insight into the relationship between defence service outcomes and housing security in later life. The life course theoretical framework is applied to the research design, data collection and analysis to explore what life course factors most contribute to housing security among the retired ex-service population.
