Edgar’s PhD research topic: “Mutual Benefits through Understanding Others: A study of Chinese international students and their perceptions of the social and cultural experiences while studying at the University of Tasmania”.
The aim of this research is to use a combination of quantitative and qualitative research to explore the experiences of Chinese international students while carrying out their studies at the University of Tasmania. From there, it is possible to extract valuable information on social ‘push and pull’ factors that are associated with undertaking tertiary level studies in Tasmania, as well as gaining knowledge on an outsider’s view of Tasmanian society. It is envisaged that this research not only benefits Chinese international students, but also will serve as a platform for further studies concentrating on visitors of Australia. This project has the potential to benefit the academic progress, the social policy-making, and the economic prosperity of UTAS, Tasmania and Australia, which brings this brief outline back full circle to the project title.
