Emily Hansen is a lecturer in the School of Sociology and Social Work at the University of Tasmania. She also holds an honorary position as a research associate at the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania. She completed a PhD in sociology at the University of Tasmania in 2001 and then worked in several research and research capacity building roles in the School of Medicine and the Menzies Research Institute Tasmania, both at the University of Tasmania. She has written two books (one with Gary Easthope) and has published research investigating contemporary discourses about lifestyle and health, evidence practice gaps, medical routines and processes of diagnosis in primary care, chronic disease management, lay epidemiology and lay understandings and experiences of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, heart disease, dementia, cigarette smoking and smoking cessation.
Emily has considerable expertise in qualitative and mixed methods research and has published a successful textbook in this field. Her work is often collaborative and cross-disciplinary in nature and contributes to the fields of sociology, nursing social epidemiology, public health and primary health care. Emily’s research to date has been funded through local and national competitive grants schemes, a career development fellowship and through contracts and consultancies with government and non-government agencies. Her current research include projects focused on smoking during pregnancy, infant feeding and GP registrar training.
In 2012 Emily is teaching two undergraduate units focused on health for sociology and nursing students. She is also supervising honours students and postgraduates from fields that include sociology, public health, pharmacy and nursing.
