Hannah is a PhD candidate and an Associate Lecturer in Criminology and Sociology in the School of Sociology & Social Work, Hobart. Her PhD research is supervised by Professor Rob White and Dr. Max Travers.
Hannah’s PhD research concentrates on understanding the perspectives and experiences of practitioners who work with people with complex needs in health and justice settings in Tasmania. At the heart of the research is a tale of two sectors, informed by firsthand accounts from approximately thirty practitioners working for diverse stakeholders in the alcohol and other drugs sector and the criminal justice system locally. Hearing what workers want, what they think about their work and those they work with, what they do well and what they hope for offers valuable insights into the identity, culture and future of the alcohol and other drugs and justice sectors in Tasmania. Numerous barriers, tensions and paradoxes are highlighted for their impact on the capacity of both sectors and their workforces to move forward and, importantly, to better support the vulnerabilities, strengths and complex needs of those they work with. Central to the research is an analytical and theoretical contribution to assist the development of multi-level strategies to build practitioner, organisational and sectoral capacity to manage change in the face of uncertainty, as well as to improve and expand the means by which this is done.
Together with Prof. Rob White, Hannah is the co-author of Working with Offenders: A Guide to Concepts and Practices (Routledge, 2010), and is currently working with Rob on another book on international innovation in offender rehabilitation (under contract).
