Teaching Responsibilities
Ashlin is currently a tutor for HGA101 Sociology A and HGA102 Sociology B. In addition, he has also lectured and tutored on behalf of the UniStart Program, which seeks to develop the academic skills of new students. He has also been provided academic support to current students as a part of the student learning mentor program for CALT.

Research Interests
Ashlin is currently researching the relationship between users and convergent mobile technology. Convergent mobile technology is the term Ashlin uses to describe smartphones, tablets and other devices that combine previously separate types of functions into new devices. For example, smartphones combine mobile phone functions with data network access and computational abilities. This research will form the basis of his PhD thesis, which explores the role of convergent mobile technology in the lives of users, including the implications of use, and the role of devices themselves in mediating and creating social relations.
Ashlin's 2011 honours thesis explored the experience of internet surveillance amongst Generation Y. He found that members of Generation Y were aware of and complicit with internet surveillance, as participants valued the benefits of access over their concern. The primary benefits of use were the immediate ability to access information and interact in a variety forms. This was conceptualised as indicative of (post)modern societies’ obsession with rapidity, as indicated in Tomlinson's culture of speed thesis. Theories of surveillance (such as social sorting, lateral surveillance, and new surveillance) were also used to understand participants’ experiences.
