In 2008 I graduated with a qualitative PhD exploring the relationship between money, morality and the good life from the perspective of young adults. I am fascinated in the process by which some of the stories that define us culturally interact with how we tell our own stories - what we value, and why. For example, what does collectively valuing money mean for individual moral capacity? How does our valued cultural characteristic of economic 'self-reliance' shape our capacity to connect with the 'other'?
My recent research interest also includes volunteering as a work sector historically overlooked and undervalued in sociology because of its peripheral location to the 'serious' market economy. From an alternative perspective, volunteering provides an invaluable glimpse into the kinds of value conflicts embodied in claiming priorities outside of the money economy.
Concomitantly has been my interest in qualitative research, employing interpretative methods through my PhD work and exploring qualitative methodological traditions more broadly throughout my teaching of the unit in 2009 and 2011.
Currently I am an associate lecturer and in 2009 and 2011 was lecturer and co-ordinator for the sociology unit HGA230/330 'Qualitative Research Methods'. I am currently lecturing and co-ordinating 'Volunteering Sociology' (HGA 208/308), a unit integrating volunteering work experience with academic critique and reflective practices.
