Current research
PhD title is: How do low income women and child and family health nurses negotiate meaning around motherhood and child-raising?
Central to contemporary ideologies of motherhood is the idea of scientific motherhood, where 'good' mothers are guided by scientific advice from authoritative experts. Historically, child health nurses have conveyed institutionalised norms and values concerning methods of child-raising and family life through surveillance and normalisation practices. The study uses notions from Foucauldian concepts to present a critical interpretation and insight into the nature of the interaction between child health nurses and parents and how they negotiate motherhood. Marie is using qualitative methods; observing and recording interactions between nurses and families followed by separate interviews with all participants.
