Melissa is a sociology PhD candidate in the School of Sociology & Social Work, Launceston. She has been employed as a research assistant with the School since 2010. Her projects have included contribution to the textbook, Society, Culture and Health by Dr Karen Willis and Dr Shandell Elmer. Melissa completed Honours in Sociology in 2011, focusing on child health nurses' perception of professionalism with regard to the exercise of autonomous practice under the supervision of Dr Karen Willis.

Melissa's PhD: The aim of the research is to explore the professional identity of different groups of specialist nurses and the consequences of differentiation for the professionalism of nursing. The research employs a qualitative methodology in which interviews with specialist nurses will be undertaken. Such groups include:
Key themes of interest are: professionalisation and professionalism of nurses, the exercise of autonomy within nursing practice, challenges to medical dominance by nursing practitioners.
This research is supervised by Dr Kristin Natalier and Dr Emily Hansen.
