You are issued a unique student identification number on enrolment and this number will allow you access to a range of services and facilities at the university. You will find that you quickly memorise your student number. It is recorded on your student ID card. You will need your ID to borrow from the library, to store photocopying and printing credit, and to sit examinations.
Your student ID card is obtained from Student Administration - please refer to campus maps to locate Student Administration on your campus.
UTAS provides a free web-based email system for all staff and students, usually referred to as 'webmail'. Your email username and password are provided on your enrolment statement. You can check your email from any computer that has access to the Internet, and you do not need to have an email program installed on your computer. Staff within the university will contact you via email from time to time, so it is very important that you check your email regularly and often. It is your responsibility to check your email. You can access your email at http://webmail.utas.edu.au/. If you don’t know your username or password, contact the Service Desk.
You can withdraw without academic penalty or incurring a HECS debt if you withdraw officially before the Census Date (check the Census date on the UTAS Key Dates). If you have any queries about withdrawing from a unit within the Faculty of Arts, please contact a faculty officer within the Facutly of Arts.
Many students are intimidated by the library when first starting out at university. It is important to realise that the library is there as a resource for you, and that the staff of the library want to help you. You can get a lot of information from the library website, especially their Training and Help webpages. If you would prefer to ask questions in person, visit the library and ask the Service Desk to explain how the library works. They can refer you to the Reference Librarian if you have specific research questions. Don’t forget, you can ask as many questions as you need to. You should try to become confident and familiar with the services and resources provided by the library in your first year - your academic success will depend on how well you can access the resources provided by the library.
Before the start of each semester, the unit coordinator contacts the Library and tells them which items are on the reading list for each unit and are therefore likely to be the most popular. The Library takes these items and physically relocates them in a section of the Library called the "Reserve" section. These items are then available only on short-term loans. This ensures that everyone can get an opportunity to access these key resources. The Library may also put other, very popular items in the Reserve section. For more information about reading lists and how to access Reserve materials, go to http://www.library.utas.edu.au/library-services/unit-reading-list-materials.
They are referring to your student ID card, which allows you to borrow from the library and store printing and photocopying credit. You get your ID card from Student Administration.
The library imposes fines for overdue items, so it is recommended that you either return the books or renew them for a further period as soon as possible. Please refer to loans and borrowing for further information.
The Service Desk is the combined UTAS information services and library contact point for problems and enquiries. The Service Desk webpage provides information about this service, as well as contact information. You can talk to the Service Desk assistants for all IT enquiries, e.g. if you have problems logging onto a university computer, or checking your uni webmail or MyLO. You can also ask about general library queries.

The easiest option is to purchase a USB thumb or flash drive. You can purchase USBs from many retailers, including the Co-op Bookshop or the TUU. Be aware that USBs can be unreliable, and it is your responsibility to also back up your data elsewhere. Remember - you cannot use a dead or faulty USB as an excuse for handing in a late assessment. A backup option is to save documents to your P drive or personal drive, which is a private and individual space on the UTAS network to which all students have access when logged onto UTAS computers using their Novell details.
For IT training and support, contact the Service Desk.

It usually takes some time to settle into the routine of university life, and sometimes this makes it difficult to meet people. There are a number of options available to help you adjust to this transition. You could join a peer-assisted study session, or you can also join one of the many clubs and societies offered by the student organisation on your campus. If you just need to talk to someone about the challenges of university life, try contacting a student adviser within the UTAS Transition Support Service. And you can always try talking to the person sitting next to you in the lecture or tutorial, as many people will be in the same situation as you.
The Tasmanian University Union or TUU is the student organisation based on the Hobart and Launceston campuses. Student organisations provide a range of services and resources for students.

For students, the most useful assistance is likely to be provided within the Learning Support website and the comprehensive First Year at UTAS website.
