The professional qualifying courses each provide a pathway to entry into the profession of social work.
The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is for individuals who want to complete social work as their first university degree. This course suits a range of people who have an interest in social work, including recent school leavers, people already in the workforce, people returning to the workforce who do not have a previous degree, people wishing to change their unfinished degree and graduates of a Polytechnic or TAFE diploma. Your study plan will depend upon your background.

Honours in a Bachelor of Social Work is undertaken concurrently in the final year of study. To be eligible for entry, students must achieve a distinction average in the academic units of the Bachelor of Social Work in the third year. Admission to honours is by invitation. The honours program develops skills in research so that students can further their interests regarding social work or a specific field of practice and undertake postgraduate studies.
This degree is available to study on the Hobart, Launceston and Cradle Coast campuses. Students can study part-time; however, this needs to be discussed with the Bachelor of Social Work Honours Coordinator. You will need to do an honours research placement, which comprises your final social work placement; this can be undertaken only in Tasmania.

The professional qualifying Master of Social Work (MSW) is for individuals who have already completed a three-year degree at a recognised university (with some social and behavioural science content) and who want to obtain a professional qualification in social work. This course suits a range of students, including those who are seeking a career change, those who want to upgrade their qualifications with the addition of a professional social work degree, and recent graduates who would like to go straight onto postgraduate studies and obtain a professional social work qualification to complement their undergraduate degree (for example, in arts, education, health science, behavioural science or nursing). The minimum time for completion is two years.
